Why Do We Get Cavities?

dental pain, rochester hills, best dentist, sedation, pain-free dentistry

Last week, we talked about what cavities are, this week, we’re back to discuss what causes them.

Cavities are formed over time. The process starts when the bacteria in your mouth feed on sugars from food and drinks, producing acids. These bacteria then form bacterial plaque. If the plaque isn’t cleaned away, the acids in it will begin to slowly eat through the layers of the tooth, creating cavities.

We Get Cavities

While the causes of cavities are varied, here are some of the most common ones:

  • Food and drinks that stick to the teeth, including sugary substances
  • Poor brushing
  • Lack of fluoride
  • Frequent eating and drinking
