Water Your Child’s Teeth Every Day!

We love seeing healthy little teeth during check-ups! To help get your little brusher on the right track for a life of healthy teeth, the American Dental Association has designated February as Children’s Dental Health Month. This year, the focus is on the benefits of choosing tap water as a beverage of choice for children.

Not only is water better than other drinks for overall health and well-being, it also has a great impact on dental health. Water is a great thirst-quencher minus all of the sugar found in fruit juice drinks, sports drinks and even flavored mineral waters which can lead to tooth decay and possible weight gain.

Outside of just preventing problems, flouridated tap water can also help strengthen teeth and bones. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states drinking fluoridated water keeps teeth strong and reduces cavities by about 25% in children and adults.

So to help your child get the water they need every day, you can use this chart for February (courtesy of the ADA) to start instilling great habits and follow these tips:

  • Keep a filled water bottle handy for outings – frozen is even better on hot summer days!
  • Limit sweetened drinks and serve in small amounts when you do. Consider watering down sweetned drinks.
  • Make drinking water fun by getting cool glasses and water containers.
  • Add some sliced fruit to water to add a bit of flavor.

We all could use a little more water!
