Tips for Keeping Your Mouthguard Clean

If you are using a mouthguard to protect your teeth while participating in sports or to help prevent teeth grinding at night, good job! You’re taking an active role in helping to keep your teeth strong and healthy. Now that you’ve established this good habit, it’s also important to make sure you’re properly cleaning and storing your mouthguard when not in use.

Keeping It Clean

Mouthguards are made from a porous material and can collect food particles and bacteria over time as you wear them. Just like toothbrushes, it’s important to clean them regularly as not doing so can increase your risk of infection and gum disease. Brush your mouthguard with a clean toothbrush and toothpaste just as you would brush your teeth. Make sure to get into the crevices to flush out any food debris and clean away unseen bacterial plaque that can build up on your mouthguard. Once fully cleaned, rinse the residue off with cool water and let dry in a vented container to all it to dry completely.

Replacing Your Mouthguard

Remember, just like other dental tools, mouthguards don’t last forever. If the fit becomes different due to wear and it becomes uncomfortable, it may be time to replace it.

Just like all health habits, cleaning your mouthguard on a daily basis is beneficial to your dental health. If you have questions about additional ways to keep your dental tools clean, ask us at your next dental appointment. You are always welcome to bring your current mouthguard in as well if you have questions about fit or wear.
