Teething Symptoms & Soothing Baby’s Discomfort

It’s a word that often strikes fear in the heart of new parents. Teething. It’s an uncomfortable phase that each baby experiences differently. There are certain signs of teething to look out for to help guide you in providing extra comfort during your baby’s teething process.

When Do Babies Start Teething?

The usual age for babies to start teething is 6 to 12 months with the two bottom teeth appearing first. It is possible that babies as young as 3-months-old will start displaying the symptoms of early teething, however. As teething pain usually starts before that first tooth breaks through, knowing what to look for can help explain new fussy behavior.

Common Symptoms of Teething

Some common symptoms to look out for are:

  • Irritability
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Excess drooling
  • Rash around the chin, neck, and mouth
  • The need to chew or gnaw on objects
  • Refusing breast or bottle

Soothing Teething Treatments

For babies in the younger range of teething, the best treatment is to soothe baby’s teeth with a cold washcloth or even to use a clean finger to gently massage sore gums. Cool teething rings are another great choice for teething babies. Something to chew on like a firm rubber teether or even a soft-bristled toothbrush are also great options. If drooling goes hand-in-hand with teething in your house, make sure to keep baby’s cheeks and chin as dry as possible and have clean bibs at the ready to help prevent rashes.

Knowing what to expect and having some soothing tools in your parental pocket can go a long way in helping your baby through this important stage in their development.
