Teeth – They Are What You Eat

How are those New Year’s resolutions going? January is a great time to renew commitments to your health. From exercising more, getting more sleep, and eating right, there are so many ways to support your wellbeing. It’s important to remember that what we eat not only promotes a healthy weight and provides energy for us to do the things we want, it also can affect our dental health.

Avoid Sugary Treats & Drinks

Sugary sodas and fruit drinks along with cookies and candy not only provide empty calories but they also have sugars that adhere to dental plaque. When combined with the acid in your mouth, the unhealthy result is tooth decay.

Limit Snacking

Eating a meal versus snacking throughout the day is ideal for your teeth as more saliva is released during a meal. Your saliva is a great tool for washing away food from your mouth and the acids they leave behind.

Choose the Right Diet

A poor diet lacking in vitamins and nutrients can also adversely affect gum health. When your body lacks the right vitamins and nutrients, it makes it more difficult for your dental tissue to resist infection. Sticking to a diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits, lean protein, and low-fat dairy products is good for both your physical and dental health.

Drink Water

Water is good for us in so many ways. Not only does it keep your mouth hydrated but it also helps to flush out the acids from food and plaque that contribute to tooth decay. Just like saliva, water helps to dilute any offenders and flush them away.

And remember, regular dental visits are always a key part of your dental plan as are brushing twice a day and flossing daily. If you stay on track and continue to pay attention to what you eat and drink throughout the year, your smile will thank you for it.
