Sugarless Chewing Gum & Your Dental Health

sugarless chewing gum, sugarless gum, sugar free gum, family dentist, cavities,

Chewing gum isn’t the grainy, sugary treat from days past. With so many varieties of sugarless chewing gum available on the market, it’s a great way to not only enjoy gum but also help clear harmful bacteria from your mouth.

That’s Right, Sugarless Gum Contains No Sugar

Sometimes things are as straight-forward as they sound! Sugarless chewing gum does not have any sugar in it to cause tooth decay. The sweet taste is derived from using a sweetener called xylitol. Xylitol not only doesn’t contain sugar but is also known to reduce the bacteria that cause cavities and plaque.

Chewing sugarless gum increases the flow of saliva in our mouth. This is beneficial as it carries calcium and phosphate which help strengthen tooth enamel. Saliva also helps wash away food particles while neutralizing acids produced by mouth bacteria.

Look for gum with the ADA Seal (American Dental Association) to ensure they meet the standards of safety. And remember, although having its benefits, chewing gum is no substitute for brushing and flossing.
