Bruxism is the name for the condition of teeth grinding and jaw clenching. Although it can be caused by stress, it’s important to note that it can also be the result of sleep disorders, an abnormal bite, or teeth that are missing or crooked. A study in the November 2016 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association notes people who drink alcohol and smokers are approximately twice as likely to grind their teeth.

What Causes Bruxism

The symptoms of teeth grinding include:

  • dull headaches
  • jaw soreness
  • teeth that are painful or loose
  • fractured teeth

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, call our office at (248) 852-3130 or ask us at your next appointment so we can determine if a mouth protector or other steps are necessary.
