September is National Gum Care Month. With an estimated 3 out of 4 American adults having gingivitis, the first step in gum disease, we thought it would be helpful to share a little bit about what gum disease is and learn more about this potentially serious condition.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the first step of gum disease. Red inflamed gums that often bleed when brushed are a very telltale sign of this initial symptom. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to the more serious condition of periodontitis.

Periodontitis

In the early stages of periodontitis, patients are often unaware that they begin to experience a slight loss of bone. As the condition progresses to moderate periodontitis, loosening of the teeth can occur due to the continued loss of bone and gum tissue. The final and most severe stage is advanced periodontitis. In this stage, teeth can become very loose, and biting and chewing may hurt.
