Summer is the perfect time to get outdoors and get moving. Whether running, walking, hiking, or biking, staying active is the goal. But while you look to your physical health, don’t forget to keep your dental health in mind. Remember to hydrate and take these few simple steps to help keep your teeth healthy while exercising.
Hydrate
- Drink water. It’s as simple as that. With so many sports drinks on the market, water is still the safest bet for your teeth. Although these beverages may be great to help fuel your body in the summer heat they can also feed the bacteria and acid that eats away the protective enamel of your tooth and contribute to tooth decay.
- Whenever possible, rinse with water after rehydrating with a sports drink to reduce your cavity risk.
- Gum with Xylitol can also prevent plaque build-up on teeth so taking a chewing break can help.
- Mouth breathing leaves your mouth dry of saliva that normally flushes your mouth of acid and bacteria and susceptible to bacteria taking hold.
Chew With Care
- Many protein bars and chews are dense and sticky, possibly causing damage to crowns and filling. If you’ve had dental work, be cautious when chewing sports aids.
- Remember that your teeth are great for chewing but aren’t tools! Tearing into that sports packet with your teeth may save you a moment but it’s better to plan ahead and cut tears into packets before running to make it easier to open them on the go.
