Healthy Teeth Need Healthy Treats

Many of us know which foods are not the best for our teeth – sugary treats like candy, cookies and pies and starchy foods like potato chips, french fries and even dried fruits are all high on the list. These foods all have a lot of sugar, aiding in the production of bacteria and, ultimately, tooth decay.

And don’t forget some of our favorite drinks contain large amounts of sugar. Soda, lemonade, specialty coffee drinks all are continual sources of sugar as we sip on them throughout the day.

Since we all have treats sometimes, proper brushing afterward helps make sure we’re doing our best to keep bacteria at bay. But did you know there are certain foods that are actually good choices for your teeth?

Good Choices for Your Chompers

Meats, cheese and nuts all provide your body with the calcium and phosphorus it needs to help protect tooth enamel. Crunchy fruits and vegetables help promote the creation of saliva in your mouth, which helps flush out the particles and acids that can lead to tooth decay.

Water is the best choice for a healthy drink for your teeth. Not only does it not have any sugar itself but it helps rinse the mouth of other cavity-causing sources. Milk and unsweetened tea are also safer for teeth.

Good Habits Pay Off

Changing word Unhealthy into Healthy by crossing off letters UN.

Constant snacking and eating aren’t healthy for your teeth as they leave a continual source of bacteria in your mouth, especially once the sugars and carbohydrates from the food turns to acid. Acid begins the decay process so leaving it on your teeth allows it to attack the enamel.

But we all need a snack sometimes and we don’t always have a toothbrush handy afterward. It’s best to turn to some of the healthy choices above when deciding what to munch on during snack time.

So think twice about what you eat as it affects your oral health as much as it affects your overall health. If you think seeing us twice a year for your check up and leaving with a clean bill of health is the only time you want to visit with us, we won’t take it personally. We’ll actually consider it a job well done!
