CRUNCH! The satisfying crush of cold ice between your teeth as you take a cooling sip from a large glass of refreshing iced tea.

But wait, it might feel good but is it good for your teeth? Generally, no. By chomping on ice you can run the risk of causing some potentially serious dental damage.

Since your mouth and saliva are warm, ice will usually melt and nothing will happen. But as teeth are not flat, you could potentially chip off a piece of the enamel on your tooth, crack a filling or even crack the tooth itself. Your teeth could also start to become sensitive to temperature extremes from food and liquids.

So next time you’re kicking back with a nice cold drink this summer, skip the ice crunching to ensure you’ll get to skip a surprise visit to come see us for a damaged tooth.
