Caring for Your Baby’s Teeth

The eagerly awaited first tooth arrives! Such an exciting time for new parents. That first tooth usually appears between the ages of six months to one-year old. Over the first three years of your baby’s life, a full set of 20 primary tooth will usually erupt starting with the top and bottom front of their mouth. Caring for your baby’s teeth right from the start goes a long way in supporting a lifetime of good dental health.

Tender Loving Care

Baby teeth can cause tenderness and often gum soreness when breaking through, for some children more than others. Soothing your baby’s pain by gently rubbing your child’s gums with clean fingers, or using cool wet gauze or teething rings to chew on can help. Although baby teeth aren’t permanent, they play an important role in helping your child begin to chew, speak, and smile. They also are placeholders for the permanent teeth waiting to take their place.

Caring for Your Baby’s Teeth

  • It may seem early but you can begin cleaning your baby’s gums with a clean, moist cloth or gauze just a few days after birth.
  • For children younger than three years of age, gently brush their teeth in the morning and evening with no more than a smear of toothpaste the size of a pea at most. For children older than roughly three years, begin working with them so they can start brushing their own teeth with your supervision. Remind them not to swallow their toothpaste when done brushing.
