Caring for Cracked And Damaged Teeth

dental emergency, cracked and damaged teeth

Dental emergencies happen. Many of us know someone who has cracked a tooth or even lost a tooth over the years through some dental accident. Knowing what to do in the moment can mean the difference between losing a tooth or being able to save it. It’s always good to be prepared in case of cracked and damaged teeth so note these tips on how to manage some common dental mishaps.

Dislodged/Knocked Out Tooth

If a child loses a baby tooth, try to find the tooth and keep it moist and call your dentist who can direct you on your best options. We can determine upon your arrival if it can be implanted. If an adult or permanent tooth is lost, again, keep it moist. Try to place it back in its socket while avoiding touching the nerve. Other options are to place it in milk, or an ADA-approved tooth preservation product to buy you some time as you head to the dentist.

Cracked Tooth

Not quite as shocking as having a tooth fall out, cracking a tooth still requires immediate care. A general rule is hot then cold. First, clean your mouth by rinsing it with warm water, and then use a cold compress on your face to keep any swelling down as you, again, head to your dentist.

Staying Safe

Some accidents can’t be helped but you can make smart choices that can avoid some common culprits!

  • Don’t chew on popcorn kernels, ice, and hard candies.
  • Don’t use your teeth as tools to open anything, be it plastic chip bags or bottle tops – teeth are for chewing food so keep it that way!
  • Do wear a mouthguard when playing certain sports.

Knowing what to do and the steps to take when faced with cracked or damaged teeth can help save your smile. Remember we are always here to help so call our office at (248) 852-3130 if you have a dental emergency of your own.
